Description

Scientific name: Symphonia macrocarpa
Family: Clusiaceae
Origin of Harvest: Madagascar

With my last trip in Madagascar made between January and February 2025 during a meeting with the Zafimaniry population, some guys introduced me to this fascinating resin.
Tree of a family that is generally not considered for resin extraction purposes, but this genus inside its bark there is something really very particular. Cutting the trunk with a knife you can see a bright yellow latex come out that after contact with oxygen begins to oxidize, just look at some photos and you can notice the change from liquid yellow to red brown almost black in solid state.
In the liquid state it is used to glue paper and other tools, while solid it is burned as a substitute for incense.

Aroma:
Slightly sweet with talc, sometimes lactonic hints, I think it all depends on the seasoning.

As you can see in the photo, I have currently requested to collect the resin inside bottles to preserve its semi-liquid state, but which solidifies in a short time.
It has to be carried out numerous researches to understand its potential.

For those interested, I organize exploratory trips with this theme.
